OST files store the offline work of MS Outlook. It basically allows you to work during server downtime or say during unavailability of internet (when Exchange Server is not connected to MS Outlook). However, vulnerability of OST files towards corruption is widely known. Exchange Server failure, errors on hard disk where OST files are stored, abrupt Outlook termination, synchronization issue between MS Outlook and Exchange Server, bad internet connectivity, virus attacks, sudden power failure or system shutdown etc. are some common reasons for OST file corruption. To restore Outlook communication, you need to repair corrupt OST files immediately as it may cause data loss.

OST Corruption Errors

Corrupt OST files tend to generate different error messages if you try to open them. However, error message depends upon the cause of corruption. MS Outlook doesn’t recognize corrupt OST files and displays different error messages if you try to access them, like the error mentioned below:

‘Unable to expand the folder…Errors could have been detected in the file xxxx.ost’

This error is most probably caused due to data synchronization issues between MS Outlook and MS Exchange Server. No need to panic if you face the above mentioned error. There are multiple methods available to resolve the error. You shouldn’t ignore the error either.

Solution

First, you can try to resolve the error using manual methods. Make sure that you’ve a reliable internet connection and search the corrupt OST file which is generating the error message. Second, check if MS Outlook is working fine. If it is, rename the corrupt OST file and try opening it again with MS Outlook. Third, check if the details of user profile provided in MS Outlook and Exchange Server are correct.

Check if there is any hardware or software related issue. Make sure that network cable, router and other hardware components are working fine. Also ensure that there is no software failure. Finally, remove the current Outlook profile and recreate it. Basically, you need to delete the current Outlook profile and replace it with the new one. And, it’s quite easy to create a new Outlook profile. To create a new Outlook profile, perform the following steps:

Now, check if the above discussed error still exists. If it is, try using the Inbox Repair Tool (Scanost.exe). Microsoft provides the free tool to repair decently corrupt OST files. However, the tool has its limitations and capable of repairing OST files with minor corruptions only. It fails to repair OST files if the corruption is severe. Use of Inbox Repair Tool is not very much recommended as it simply deletes the part it doesn’t understand which can result in to data loss.
